Matt Campos (He/Him)
Matt Campos is an interdisciplinary artist whose practice explores the intersection of identity, memory, and lived experience through a deeply intuitive visual language. Rooted in both personal narrative and collective cultural references, Campos’ work reflects an ongoing investigation into how place, emotion, and human connection shape the stories we carry and the images we create.
Working across painting, mixed media, and experimental processes, Campos approaches artmaking as both exploration and conversation. His compositions often balance expressive gesture with intentional structure, creating spaces where vulnerability and strength coexist. Through layered surfaces, dynamic mark-making, and a thoughtful use of color and form, he invites viewers into moments that feel simultaneously intimate and universal.
Campos’ artistic process is guided by curiosity and responsiveness — allowing materials, intuition, and environment to influence the evolution of each piece. Rather than imposing rigid outcomes, he embraces discovery as an essential part of the work, resulting in artworks that carry a sense of movement, transformation, and emotional resonance.
Themes of belonging, resilience, and self-reflection frequently emerge throughout his practice. Drawing inspiration from personal history as well as broader social and cultural landscapes, Campos creates work that asks viewers to slow down and engage more deeply with both image and feeling. His work serves as a bridge between internal experience and shared human understanding, encouraging dialogue about identity, growth, and the power of creative expression.
As his practice continues to evolve, Campos remains committed to creating work that is honest, accessible, and emotionally grounded. Whether presented in gallery settings, collaborative projects, or community-centered environments, his work reflects a dedication to authenticity and the transformative potential of art.
Artist Statement:
“I am an artist, a beadworker, a teacher, a drum maker, and a shamanic practitioner based in Santa Fe, New Mexico. I spent many years learning from Medicine woman, Irene Skau. That was followed with advanced classes through Michael Harner’s Foundation for Shamanic Studies.
I studied Fine Arts at a university but over the years after graduating I found myself not doing the thing I love the most. I spent many years “just busy” with life. I ignored my craft for decades until I met a medicine woman who would become my first teacher. I would learn from her for the next ten years.
I credit shamanism for enriching my life and re-awakening the creative force within me. And I continue to grow with it. I wish the same for you.” - Matt Campos
