“Yes, and that, too...” - Coulter Prehm shares over coffee while discussing those things that he actively loves. After completing his undergraduate art degree in 2008, Prehm found himself in Santa Fe studying at the Ryder Studio School, learning to paint from a master.
Though, over the course of those years Tony Ryder imparted to Coulter not only the ability to draw and paint, but most importantly to see. Prehm’s process is meditative and centered around a desire to get quiet, to be still, and to observe with clarity, with eyes wide open.
Prehm states, “All humans, all creatures on the planet even, are participating in a shared experience of life and reality; my work is centered on an intentional observance of life and light and, hopefully, truth and the desire to share this very personal perspective with others. This is full of challenges. How do we actually share our internal journey in a way that is communicative and useful? At this time I feel that the best way forward is to think only of creating to the best of my ability with the hope that thoughtfulness coupled with creative work will eventually lead to the actualizing of my deepest desire for my art; that in the long term my work would affect the human community in a positive and meaningful way.”
As a visual artist Coulter values fine draftsmanship and beautiful mark making; traditional qualities of great art that remain forever pertinent as excellence never goes out of style. Prehm does his best to apply this ideal of excellence to all aspects of life; a world built around his daily pursuits of painting, rock climbing, and creating tattoo art. All these, as well as the meaningful relationships in his life, occupy Coulter’s time and attention as he strives to live a life rooted in love and adventure.
And so, July 8 - 18, with an opening reception on July 8 from 5-6:30pm, Bobby Beals presents in Santa Fe at Bishop’s Lodge, a solo show by Coulter Prehm titled Observance. Prehm will exhibit original oil paintings along with drawings, sketches and color studies, sharing the entire creative process and offering an intimate look into his artistic journey.
